Have students stand on the stairway holding onto the railing and turn to look at the 1894 Class Photo on the wall on the stairway. Ask what they observe from the picture. Additional questions might be:
How many girls?
How many boys?
Which student is the oldest?
Which student is the youngest?
Notice that all the boys are wearing suits. Probably the teacher had told them that the photographer was coming and that they should wear their best clothes.
But what do you notice about their shoes? Why do they look like that? (They walked to school on muddy or dusty roads.)
Also, everyone looks very somber. Do you know what that word means? Discuss.
To me, one boy looks quite proud. (Point out boy with chain from his pocket.) What do you think this chain is for? (After some speculations by the students, tell them that this boy is probably the only student with a pocket watch. (Show the pocket watch that is kept in the drawer of the the teacher's desk.) The chain on the watch is fastened to a belt loop and the watch is fastened to a belt loop and the watch is placed in a small pocket in the pants. If anyone is wearing jeans, point out this pocket which is still on many pants today even though no one carries a pocket watch any longer.
